Things That Go Bump in the Night: Weird Noises in Your House

October 5, 2023

Have you ever been startled by strange noises during the quiet hours of the night? Perhaps you hear a scratching sound within the walls or a mysterious gurgling noise from the pipes? While unnerving, these sounds often come from common household occurrences. When you’re experiencing things that go bump in the night, weird noises in your house could be signals that repairs are in order.

Scritching and Scratching Inside the Walls

Scratching noises inside the walls can be unsettling, especially when you are trying to sleep. However, there is no need to panic. This sound often indicates the presence of small rodents or insects. Mice and rats, for example, scurrying loudly within wall cavities. It could even be racoons! The thought of such uninvited guests is unnerving, so a professional pest control service can handle these pesky visitors.

Running Water

Water running when no faucet is on is another common household sound. Common plumbing problems in homes include a leaky pipe or a faulty valve. If the sound of running water is keeping you up at night, it is wise to investigate the source. Ignoring it could lead to water damage in your home. Luckily, a plumber can identify and fix the problem.

Humming or Buzzing

Humming from outlets or light fixtures is not uncommon, but it usually indicates an electrical issue. It could mean the wiring is old or an electrical device is malfunctioning. Do not ignore this sound, as it could indicate a potential fire hazard. Consult a licensed electrician to address the issue.

Benign humming sounds may be due to the ordinary sounds your refrigerator makes, and you’re just hearing them at night because it’s very quiet in your house.

Gurgling Drains

Gurgling pipes might sound like something out of a horror movie, but they are usually harmless. This sound often occurs when air gets trapped in the water lines. However, if the gurgling is accompanied by slow drainage or a foul smell, it could indicate a serious issue like a blocked sewer line. Contact a plumber to diagnose and rectify the situation.

Creaks and Pops When No One Is Walking

Pops and creaks can be disconcerting, especially when no one is moving around your house. These sounds occur due to the natural expansion and contraction of building materials. As the temperature changes, your house expands and contracts. While these sounds can be startling, they are usually no cause for concern.

While these weird noises in your house might seem scary, they are often explainable. If you are unsure or concerned about an abnormal noise, it is best to consult a professional. They can ensure your home remains a safe and peaceful haven.
