Tools You Need To Clean Out Your Home Drainage System

Maintaining a clean drainage system is vital for a healthy, functional home. Over time, food scraps, grease, hair, and other debris cause blockages that lead to unpleasant odors, slow water flow, or even costly plumbing repairs. With the right tools, tackling these drainage issues yourself becomes easier. Here are the top tools you need to clean out your home drainage system.

Plunger

A plunger is a fundamental tool for clearing minor clogs in sinks, tubs, and toilets. With a few quick, controlled pushes, a plunger creates enough suction and pressure to loosen obstructions. Be sure to choose the appropriate plunger shape depending on the drain you’re working on.

For instance, a cup-shaped plunger works best for flat surfaces like sinks, while a flange plunger is better for toilets. Always check that there’s enough water covering the plunger’s rubber surface to form an airtight seal before use for optimal results.

Drain Snake

When blockages go deeper in the pipes and a plunger can’t do the trick, a drain snake becomes your go-to solution. This tool features a long, flexible cable with a corkscrew end that breaks up or retrieves stubborn clogs made of hair, soap scum, or other debris. Insert the snake into the drain, then crank or push it to reach the obstruction. Finally, carefully pull out the debris.

Jetter Hose

For heavy-duty cleaning, a jetter hose works wonders. This high-pressure water hose connects to a pressure washer to flush out debris, grease buildup, and even small tree roots from your drainage pipes. While a bit more technical to set up, jetter hoses save you from more expensive or invasive methods for clearing drainpipes.

When choosing a jetter hose, consider the working pressure rating to avoid incompatibility that may cause suboptimal cleaning. These hoses are particularly effective in outdoor drains or larger plumbing systems. However, they require careful handling to avoid damaging your pipes, so always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Protective Gear

Safety gear includes essential tools for cleaning your home drainage system to avoid harmful substances and potentially rigid debris. Gloves, preferably made of thick rubber or nitrile, will protect your hands from harmful substances like bacteria, grease, and chemicals.

Safety goggles are essential for shielding your eyes from debris or splashes, especially when using tools like a jetter hose or chemical cleaners. Wearing old clothes or a waterproof apron can minimize messes and keep you protected throughout the process.

Regular plumbing maintenance for your home is important to prevent blockages and extend the lifespan of your drainage system. Maintaining a clean drainage system doesn’t have to be overwhelming when you have the right tools at hand. Keep your drains in top condition, and you’ll save yourself potential headaches and unnecessary plumbing expenses.
