How to Protect Your Home During Storms

September 22, 2022

Storms are known for causing a lot of damage to homes and property. While most home owner’s insurance will cover these damages, you still don’t want to risk dealing with weather-related damage in general, right? The best way to prepare for these storms is by preparing your home with the right measures.

There are a lot of different ways to protect your home from storms, but it is important to remember that you have to do this in advance and not after the storm has hit. If you wait until after a storm, it may be too late. So, here is everything you need to know about protecting your home before the next major storm hits!

Utilize Garage Doors

Storms are already known for causing damage to your houses, but they can do the same for cars too. While one fix would be storing your car underneath a garage, you should take an additional step. Not all garages have doors. So, if your garage does not have a door, you’re not only risking your car to get damaged, but if this is attached to your house, you will be risking your house getting damaged too.

Garage doors are used to create a barrier, to protect people or animals, or even to provide a privacy barrier. Plus, this is just a great security feature for a home too. Ideally, you’re going to want to get one that has steel doors. This is an improvement that can definitely help!

Seal Up Windows

If you have an area of your home that has large windows, such as ones that cover an entire wall, you are putting your home at risk. Plantation shutters are a great solution for windows that need to be protected from the elements. They are easy to install and can provide protection against wind, rain, hail, and snow. These can be an inexpensive option and are typically made from durable and resistant materials such as aluminum and steel.

Make Sure Your Roof is in Good Condition

As a homeowner, you should always make sure that your roof is in good condition. It is vital to have a well-maintained roof because it can prevent the spread of fire, leaks, mold, and other hazards. To ensure that your roof is in good condition, you need to:

– Check the board sheathing for any damage or missing nails.

– Check the shingles for any signs of wear and tear.

– Check the flashing for any signs of leaks.

– Make sure that there are no gaps between boards or nails as this can cause leaks and water damage inside your home.

Ideally, you’re going to need to talk to a professional about all of this.

Don’t Forget Your Lawn

You shouldn’t forget your lawn either; in case of a storm with strong winds, something from your lawn could fly and hit your house. Make sure that the trees in your yard won’t easily fall; the same would go for the branches too.
