The Different Types of Upholstery Fabric

October 29, 2022

You’re working on revamping a new furniture piece that makes a statement about your unique home’s design. You need to add upholstery to complete the item. What material should you use? Continue reading to learn about the different types of upholstery fabric you can use for your next DIY furniture project.

Natural Fabrics

Natural fabrics are organic, eco-friendly options to consider when looking for new upholstery materials.

The Different Types of Upholstery Fabric

Cotton

Cotton is the most common natural material because of its softness and resistance to wearing down. It’s more susceptible to stains, so you’ll want to avoid dirt and spills. It’s both affordable and desirable and will be the perfect addition to your home.

Wool

Wool is incredibly durable, retains its shape, and resists fading over time. This cozy, soft material won’t fray after repeated use. Another perk of wool is that it takes a while to absorb moisture, so it’s easy to clean stains before they settle into the fibers.

You can use all-natural wool for your next furniture project, or you may consider using wool blended with synthetic fibers. Natural wool is difficult to clean, but wool with synthetic fibers is a little easier to maintain.

Silk

Silk is an expensive, elegant upholstery option known for its shine and luxurious texture. Did you know silk is also very durable and absorbent? It is a great addition to furniture pieces and even works well on accent pillows.

Silk requires a professional cleaning if it succumbs to a stain, but you won’t regret incorporating this fabric into your home.

Leather

Leather is the most durable, naturally occurring material homeowners love to include, and it’s easy to clean! Simply wipe the surface, run a small vacuum overtop to pick up dust, and use a leather conditioner to keep its shine. Leather is an ideal upholstery material for homeowners with pets, as well!

Synthetic Fabrics

Synthetics are a different type of fabric to create long-lasting, strong upholstery.

Polyester

Polyester is a synthetic material created from petroleum. Some of polyester’s best features are its water resistance and defense against scratches and stains. It’s great for both seats and sofas for your home.

Nylon

If you’re looking for something that resembles silk, nylon might be the answer. It is easy to clean and resistant to dirt. It’s not as durable as other materials, but this trustworthy fabric will maintain its shape and won’t fade.

Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a very common synthetic material used for a wide range of products, including furniture upholstery fabrics. It absorbs moisture and won’t tear easily, and the texture resembles the softness of wool. If you’re looking for something durable and affordable, consider polypropylene for your next project!

To keep your new furniture spotless, the upholstery fabric might need a good cleaning. Consider cleaning your upholstery every six months. The several health benefits of furniture upholstery cleaning will keep the air fresh and your home looking elegant.
