Castle Door to Steel Gate: A Brief History of Home Security

December 13, 2023

From the castle door of medieval times to the steel gates of today, home security has been a perennial concern for homeowners. This brief history of home security will take you on a journey from the towering fortresses of yesteryear to the sophisticated systems we use today.

Medieval Home Security: It Helped If You Owned a Castle

In the Middle Ages, if you were fortunate (and rich) enough to own a castle, home security was a matter of architectural design and manpower.

Castle Gatehouses

Castle gatehouses played a crucial role in home security during these times. They served as the first line of defense against invading forces, providing a secure entrance to the castle. These structures were typically equipped with multiple doors and barriers, creating a gauntlet that attackers had to navigate under a barrage of arrows, stones, and even boiling oil.

Portcullises

Complementing the gatehouse was the portcullis, a heavy grille made of wood or metal that could be dropped vertically to block the castle entrance. The portcullis was a formidable barrier that could withstand ramming and offered the defenders a safe position from which to repel invaders. Portcullises also trapped invaders in the entrance to the castle gatehouse, making them easy targets for defenders.

The Invention of Home Video Monitoring

Fast forward to the 20th century, where we saw the introduction of technology into home security. One significant development was the invention of home video monitoring.

A Black Nurse Invented and Patented It in 1966

Marie Van Brittan Brown, a Black nurse from Queens, New York, invented the first home security system that utilized video surveillance. She patented her invention in 1966, paving the way for modern home security systems.

Many Contemporary Security Cameras are Fakes

Interestingly, not all contemporary security cameras serve their supposed purpose. Many are fakes, serving as deterrents rather than actual monitoring devices. Their mere presence is often enough to discourage potential intruders. In fact, mounting inoperable security cameras is one of several clever DIY home security hacks that can help protect your home.

The Rapid Adoption of Smart Doorbells

The 21st century has seen the rapid adoption of smart doorbells. These devices combine traditional doorbells with video cameras, allowing homeowners to see and communicate with visitors without opening the door.

Steel Security Doors: Modern, Affordable Castle Gates

Steel security doors stand as the modern, affordable equivalent of medieval gatehouse doors. Their benefits inspire homeowners to install them as robust barriers that provide an excellent line of defense against break-ins, offering protection that is both practical and cost-effective. Steel doors are further enhanced by steel security screen doors, which come in a variety of metal designs that echo the portcullises of old. While steel security storm doors aren’t intended to trap anyone in battle, they nevertheless symbolize the progress from the castle door to the steel gate in our ongoing quest for home security.
