Should You Build Rather Than Buy Your Next Home?

When it comes to having your dream home, you might think about buying the perfect property, or a fixer-upper to put your mark on, but most people don’t think about building their own from scratch. After all, the TV shows make it look like a monumental task, and only suitable for those with huge budgets.

That’s not the case at all, building your own home is absolutely within reach for people with a variety of budgets.

Here’s why you might want to consider building rather than buying.

You make the decisions

Your home, your rules. Rather than try and adapt an existing property around your needs or try and compromise, you can customize it exactly the way you want in order to fit in with your lifestyle.

You can work with a designer and architect who will be able to get to the root of what you’re looking for. If you purchase the land, you can also look at the wide variety of display homes that might be suitable for you too.

Having this amount of control over your home is great, if you want to put resources into having extra bedrooms, a cinema room, or a hot tub, you can, it’s up to you.

The style of your house can also be different too and doesn’t have to look exactly like all the others around it. It’s a chance to put a little personality and style into it.

It can be cheaper

In a lot of cases, buying the land and then paying for the property to be built can be cheaper than buying an existing property and bringing it to the standard you want. With the housing marketing the way it is, with prices very high, then you can either save money overall or spend the same amount on a much better property.

Cheaper to run

There are a lot of regulations that dictate the energy efficiency and materials used to build new properties. Older properties can be very expensive when it comes to energy bills, not to mention the impact on the environment.

Eco friendly

If sustainability is important to you, then you can choose to incorporate sustainable and energy-efficient construction methods and materials. Your overall impact on the environment will be greatly reduced and by utilizing things like solar panels and under-floor heating, you’ll be making your house a very low user of power.

Low maintenance

Keeping an older property in good repair can be time-consuming and expensive. With a new build property, the work will be under warranty for up to a decade, so you won’t have to worry about it for a while.

Final thoughts

There’s no one right way to do things when it comes to buying or building your dream property. Depending on what you’re looking for, the area, your budget, and whether you can devote the time and energy to a self-build will all have an impact. For a lot of people, self-build is the perfect way to go.
