Types of Storm Damage and How To Avoid Them

Protecting one’s property from the forces of nature is one of the biggest challenges many homeowners face. Storms cause severe damage to our homes and surroundings, and preparation is key. Learn more about the common types of storm damage and how to avoid them to keep your home safe and mitigate the costs of repairs.

Wind Damage

High winds rip shingles off roofs, topple trees, and break windows. Minimize wind damage by regularly inspecting your roof and repairing or replacing loose or damaged shingles. Consider investing in impact-resistant shingles, which withstand strong winds and harsh weather conditions, for added protection. Trim your trees to remove any branches that may threaten your house or power lines when strong winds cause them to snap and blow away.

Hail Damage

Hailstorms leave behind dents on roofs, siding, and even vehicles. Protect your car from hail damage by parking in a garage or under a carport.

Invest in durable roofing materials for your home, such as metal or asphalt shingles, and select impact-resistant siding options, like cementitious fiberboard. Consider installing storm shutters to your windows to prevent the glass from breaking during hailstorms.

Flooding

Heavy rain may cause flash floods, which damage the home’s foundation, basement, and interior. Keep water away from your foundation by properly grading and installing a sump pump in your basement. Additionally, install gutter systems to direct water away from your home, and consider installing flood vents to allow floodwaters to flow through your foundation.

Water Damage

Water damage may occur from leaks and seepage even if your home doesn’t experience complete flooding. Water is one of the most common causes of property damage and may lead to various damages, from broken gutters to mold.

Inspect your roof, windows, doorways, and walls regularly to identify potential weak points. Keep the gutters and downspouts clear of debris to ensure proper drainage. Maintain and repair appliances and plumbing, and consider investing in a water leak detection system to help prevent indoor leaks.

Electrical Damage

Lightning strikes cause electrical damage, such as power surges or fires that significantly affect your home’s electronics. Use service entrance surge protectors at the entrances of your home to protect your electronics from lightning. These devices are similar to regular surge protectors in their ability to divert electricity into the ground, but they also protect hardwired devices. Additionally, unplug electronics during severe storms to minimize the risk of damage.

Protecting your home from storm damage is challenging, but with proper preparation and proactive measures, it is possible to minimize the risks. Following this guide will make it easier to avoid these types of storm damage and ensure your home remains safe and sound.
